Don't Kill The Birds

Bird Flu is finally here in Northern Europe.
DEFRA's response to this is that they are going to kill all birds within a one mile radius of any dead bird found with avian flu (grippe).
This is terrible for the following reasons -

1 It will be too late as by the time any avian carcass is found any other birds will have flown away. The basis of killing hundreds of healthy birds is just dumb. Not ALL birds will get avian flu anyway.

2 As It won't work anyway - should we carry this further by killing all humans within a one mile radius of anyone found with Bird Flu ?...

3..Birds fly freely and always have - are we to be the only nation that does this - while the rest of Europe just lets the epidemic runs its course ?

4 - Defra has TOTALLY ignored the consequences of killing wild birds- the whole ecological system is dependent on birds controlling pests - we'll be up to our armpits in bugs.

5.. Defra royally screwed up on the Last epidemic - remember all those cute pictures and footage of burning cattle carcasses ? Just because Supermarkets wouldn't buy the beef from uninfected animals that had been injected against that epidemic.

6.. I understand the need to protect poulty farms - they'll just have to keep their flocks indoors until the epedemic is over. That's the sane and sensible solution - and it will cost less than another debacle in the Countryside.
The last cockup ruined not only the countryside but also the tourism industry (just about the last industry the UK has ..)

Scream at your MP to prevent this from happening - if you don't there will be a terrible silence every morning instead of the Dawn Chorus......
