Wow that was weird - but nice birds !
My phone went dead ... internet too (and I'd paid the bill too !)Eircom said I had a phone .... yes but it's a mobile.
Eircom kept assuring me they'd fix it - but it went dead on Friday evening and the Celtic Tiger that Eircom mantles itself as doesn't work weekends !
Monday came & went - I screamed at Eircom a lot - Tuesday,Wedneday (Oh but we've fixed all the lines in your area), Thursday came & went.. Friday I'm going on Kerry Radio with a tape recording of all our conversations ...
the lovely Dermot appeared and was really helpful but someone had connected the wires up wrong under the ground somewhere and another weekend passed..
The phones finally got fixed on Monday where I had one of the thrills of my life -
THE SKELLIGS !!!!!
A bunch of rocks in the North Atlantic surrounded by crashing waves and inhabited with PUFFINS (God's Cutest Birds) and Guillemots and a huge colony of Gannets.
(At first you think that Small Skelling is covered in snow or bird poo - but it's all white Gannets !) The journey over was a nice calm day - just as well the boats are pretty small (I found myself the only outsider as everyone else was on a pilgrimage from Seattle !). The climb up Skellig Michael was quite steep but I backed out of the stairs (all 600 !) about halfway up when it turned into a 3 ft wide path with a cliff on either side and no handrail !!) I had a good time photographing puffins though and wished I'd been a bit braver to get really close to them.
Small Skellig is HUGE close up and a jagged mountain of rocks and birds - quite a stunning experience... pictures coming on this blog TODAY !
It really is the best day out in Ireland !! But I don't think I'd like to be there in the winter (frankly I've heard of getting away from it all - but a granite rock in the North Atlantic ? - those monks were braver than me !)
